Las Guanas Eco-Archaeological Trail
This easy walking trail is located at the west end of Playa Esmeralda (where are located the all-inclusive resorts Sol Rio de Luna Y Mares and Paradisus Rio de Oro). Inaugurated on May 1, 1999, the 1060-meter loop trail showcases the beauty of the local flora and fauna in an area of 16 hectares.
It's part of the Bahia de Naranjo Nature Park.
This self-guided hike bring visitors through a forest with 127 plant species; 14 of them endemic. The most important populations of the regional endemic tree known as Guana (Hildegardia cubensis) can be found here; as well as centenary specimens of the Aguacate cimarrón cactus (Dendrocereus nudiflorus). A varied terrestrial fauna also characterizes the area, with two regional endemic species and more than 100 species of birds, 15 of them endemic, and more than 33 migratory species.
The marked path crosses the Siboney cave with burial replicas and pictographs, and on a few places along the trail you can learn about aborigines customs with full-size replicas of indigenous Taino. The trail also leads to a Mirador (lookout) with a spectacular view of Playa Esmeralda.
How to get there:
