Chorro de Maita and Aldea Taina
Chorro de Maita is an early colonial archaeological site in the municipality of Banes in Holguin province, near the town of Guardalavaca and surrounding resort areas. Dating back to the 15th century, this territory is the oldest and longest inhabited regions of Cuba. The site consists of an excavated indigenous settlement and cemetery with dozens of well-preserved human remains. It is the first Aboriginal cemetery of ceramist farmers found in Cuba from the period around the arrival of the first Spaniards. Admission fee to the museum: 5 USD.
Aldea Taina (Taino Village)
Opposite the Chorro the Maita Museum is a replica of a Taino village featuring traditional circular dwellings and life-size models of Tainos gathered in various scenes depicting their way of life. The memory of this past culture is also perpetuated through dancing and healing ritual shows, of which you can participate. There's a bar/restaurant at the entrance of the site.
How to get there:
Aldea Taina is included in the bus route of the Hop-on/Hop-off Guardalavaca Bus Tour, or you can get there on your own (taxi or rented vehicle). You may also book a guided excursion (transfers included) from the tour representatives at your hotel, many of them included a stop at Chorro de Maita and/or Aldea Taina. See our Excursions section for more details.
