Cayo Saetia
Cayo Saetia is small key (42 km2) on the north coast of Holguin province at the entrance of the Bahia de Nipe, the biggest bay in Cuba. It belongs to the municipality or Mayari, located 20 km (12 mi) south-east. About 65% of Cayo Saetia is covered in natural forests and the rest by pasturelands that provide an ideal habitat in which herds of imported animals such as zebras, white-tailed deer, antelopes, wild boar, wild bulls, buffaloes, camels, ostriches, peacocks, and macaws roam freely along with native species. These exotic animals were gifts or imports from African countries, now they populate this islet that was once a private vacation spot for Fidel Castro and his family. Cayo Saetia also boasts a dozen of small pristine beaches.
Here you can go on "African" Jeep Safaris, do horseback riding, enjoy non-motorized water sports, go snorkeling or diving, or simply relax on its intimate beaches.
There's lodging available on the islet, the Villa Cayo Saetia which includes 12 air-conditioned rooms equipped with private bathroom, telephone with international service, satellite TV, minibar, and a safety box. There’s also a nice restaurant overlooking the beach.
How to get there:
You can arrive to Cayo Saetia by sea, by air (helicopter from Guardalavaca), or by land through a small bridge that connect the cayo with the main island. The majority of people visit Cayo Saetia as a day-trip from Holguin's resorts, see our Excursions section for more details.
